# Device setup

> Get your Parable device on WiFi and capturing in a couple of minutes

Your Parable device arrives already linked to your workspace. Setting it up
means giving it two things: power and WiFi. There is no app to install — the
whole flow happens from your phone.

## Connect it to WiFi

<Steps>
  <Step title="Plug in power">
    Give the device about 30 seconds to start. A brand-new device goes straight
    into setup mode. A device that was set up on a different network before (for
    example at our office) enters setup mode on its own about two minutes after
    failing to find that network — or immediately if you **tap the button on the
    device four times quickly**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Join the setup network">
    On your phone, open WiFi settings and join the network named
    **Parable-Setup-XXXX** (the last four characters are unique to your device).
    If the device has been set up before, its light ring pulses soft blue while
    this network is broadcasting; a brand-new device stays dark.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick your WiFi network">
    A setup page pops up automatically. Choose your network from the list, type
    the password, and tap **Connect**. If nothing pops up within a few seconds,
    open your browser and go to **[http://10.42.0.1](http://10.42.0.1)** while still joined to the
    setup network.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Wait for the setup network to disappear">
    After you tap Connect you'll see a confirmation page, and shortly after, the
    *Parable-Setup* network vanishes — that's the device switching over to your
    WiFi. It's online within about a minute.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm it's online">
    In the Parable app, open **Settings → Devices**. Your device shows as
    online, and ambient capture can be turned on or off right there.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## What the light means

| Light                            | Meaning                                                |
| -------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| Off | Nothing said now will be saved. |
| One advancing amber dot | Ambient capture is armed; quiet audio is not saved. |
| Soft amber pulse (full ring) | Ambient speech is being saved. |
| Stronger amber pulse (full ring) | A manual recording or voice enrollment is being saved. |
| Soft blue pulse (full ring) | WiFi setup mode is on. |

The amber dot is the only persistent "armed" indicator — a full-ring pulse
always means audio is actively being saved.

## Moving the device or changing WiFi

Tap the device's button **four times quickly**. The setup network comes back
within seconds, and the flow above starts over. Submitting a new network in
the setup page replaces the old one.

If your WiFi simply goes down, you don't need to do anything: after a couple
of minutes the device brings the setup network back up in case you want to
point it somewhere else, and when your network returns, it reconnects on its
own.

## Troubleshooting

| Symptom                                                                | Fix                                                                                                                                                        |
| ---------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| The setup page doesn't pop up | While joined to *Parable-Setup-XXXX*, open your browser and visit `http://10.42.0.1`. Phones occasionally skip the popup for networks they've seen before. |
| Typed the wrong WiFi password | The setup network reappears within about two minutes. Rejoin it and try again. |
| Your network isn't in the list | Tap **Add hidden network** on the setup page and type the network name yourself. |
| Your network needs a username *and* password (802.1X / WPA-Enterprise) | Not supported yet — contact us and we'll figure out the right path for your office. |

  Wondering what the device saves, for how long, and who can hear it? [Security
